Princess Diana’s brother’s warning to Prince Harry about Meghan Markle came true

Harry had hoped his mother's family would find Meghan and Diana similar.

Charles Spencer, the younger brother of the late Princess Diana, shared his worries with his nephew, Meghan Markle was moving before they got married. These concerns, which Diana’s sisters and close friends also had, turned out to be surprisingly accurate.

Spencer’s warning, given sometime before September 2017, asked Harry to slow down and think carefully before rushing into marriage. This wasn’t just disapproval but a thoughtful warning based on worries about whether Meghan would fit in with the royal family and how well she could adjust to its strict expectations. According to the book Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War between the Windsors, found by Express, the advice given at Prince William’s request showed that Diana’s wider family circle also felt uneasy.

Author Tom Bower revealed, “Harry had introduced Meghan to Diana’s two sisters, Jane and Sarah, and her best friend, Julia Samuel. Harry assumed that Diana’s family and friends would see a similarity between Diana and his fiancée… Both, he said, shared the same problems. He was disappointed. No one agreed that his vulnerable mother had anything in common with his girlfriend. More discomforting for him, they thought Meghan would not fit in with the Royal Family.”

Meghan’s issues with the royals were seen long ago

The concerns went beyond the Spencers. Diana’s sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Baroness Jane Fellowes, along with close friends, also watched the relationship with some discomfort. Importantly, they didn’t see the strong resemblance between Meghan and Diana that Harry had hoped to show.

This lack of similarity made them worry that Meghan’s personality and background were too different from Diana’s, which could mean she wouldn’t fit well into royal life. They questioned whether Meghan could handle the pressures and rules that come with being part of the monarchy.

Adding to the situation was the view of Meghan’s former talent agent, Gina Nelthorpe Cowne. Though Nelthorpe Cowne spoke directly to Meghan, her warnings reflected a common understanding in the entertainment industry about how much royal life would require giving up. When she tried to explain what fully committing to this new life would mean, Meghan resisted, which makes sense since she doesn’t it to being wrong. This showed a clear difference between how Meghan saw her future and the concerns of people who knew more about how the royal family works.

The worries from Spencer, Diana’s sisters, and even Meghan’s former agent all focused on how hard it might be for Meghan to adjust to royal life. These weren’t just personal opinions but came from an understanding of the special challenges that come with the role. The big differences between Meghan’s life before royalty and the strict traditions of the royal family suggested there could be serious difficulties.

The speed of the relationship also added to these worries, since it left little time for Meghan or Harry to prepare and adapt. In the end, Spencer’s cautious advice wasn’t an overreaction but a realistic prediction of real problems.
