Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is officially the eighth story in the wildly popular Harry Potter series, as per Pottermore. Written for the stage by Jack Thorne, John Tiffany, and J. K. It follows Albus Severus Potter, Harry Potter’s son, as he arrives to study at Hogwarts. Albus unexpectedly gets sorted into the house of Slytherin. Subsequently, he struggles to live up to Harry’s legacy, making him resentful of his father — who, incidentally, has become the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic.

The show opened on 30 July 2016 at the Palace Theatre in London’s West End. Demand was ridiculously high, as you might expect, and performances continue at the venue today. The show has since gone global, performing in New York, Melbourne, San Francisco, Hamburg, Toronto, and Tokyo.

Upon the announcement of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Rowling quickly pointed out it’s not a book and took to X to say as much. But is the story a movie?

As of right now, there is no Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie, and Warner Bros. has no plans to make one despite rumors suggesting a 2025 release. However, it continues to run as a stage play in several cities worldwide, including London, New York, Melbourne, Hamburg, and Tokyo. In September 2024, the show will embark on a tour of North America, which will be the first time it’s gone on tour.

The story hasn’t even been published as a book since its creation. Harry Potter fans can, however, purchase both parts of the stage play’s script. They’ve been released in print and digital formats as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – Part One and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – Part Two.

Whether a movie or book adaptation of the play will ever see the light of day remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt either would go down well with the franchise’s legions of fans. If only we could wave a magic wand and say, “Cursed Childium Filmus!”

We know that Warner Bros. has been actively looking for ways to expand the wizarding world of Harry Potter, but how likely are we to get a new film, a sequel, or a remake in the near future?

The acclaimed status of the film franchise, which ran from 2001 to 2011, arguably doesn’t leave a lot of leeway for a remake, but that has hardly stopped Hollywood moguls before. In fact, it has been confirmed that a television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s fantasy saga with a whole different cast is already in the works.

Many Potterheads have been left wondering why WB is going to such lengths just to reproduce Harry Potter with a fresh coat of paint, but according to the producers have claimed as part of the announcement, this new series is going to be meticulously adapting every bit of the Harry Potter novels that didn’t make it to the big screen.

Frankly, that doesn’t begin to justify a television show by half, but Harry Potter is one of the most prized IPs currently out there. If Amazon is willing to throw away more than a billion dollars developing a mediocre Lord of the Rings television adaptation, what’s stopping a rival from doing the same with their No. 1 moneymaker? (Ironically enough, Warner continues to retain the rights to Lord of the Rings movies.)

So, whether we’d like to it it or not, there’s probably going to be another Harry Potter movie somewhere down the line, but how far away and in what form are the real questions…

For years now, Potterheads have had to live with the dreadful possibility of a Cursed Child movie adaptation looming on the horizon.

For those of you who don’t know, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was J.K. Rowling’s official sequel to The Deathly Hallows, taking place many years after the events of that book and centering around Harry, Hermione, and Ron’s children. There were a host of controversial creative decisions bogging down The Cursed Child, and suffice it to say, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone, Potterhead or otherwise, who doesn’t hate that story.

Luckily, Warner Bros. has shown a surprising sense of insight by avoiding The Cursed Child up to this point but the rumor mill has recently been abuzz with speculation. Further fanning those flames was director Chris Columbus’ remarks to The Hollywood Reporter, saying that he wouldn’t be opposed to the idea of directing The Cursed Child.

“A version of Cursed Child with Dan, Rupert and Emma at the right age, it’s cinematic bliss,” he said. “If you’re a film nerd or cinephile, it’s kind of like what Abrams did with Star Wars. There’s no question if you’re a Star Wars fan, you were moved just seeing them on screen, seeing Harrison Ford as Han Solo again and Chewy. I think that would be the same situation for Harry Potter fans. To able to actually see these adult actors now back in these roles? Oh, yeah. It would be amazingly fun to make that film or two films.”

As for the cast , we have a clip of Rupert Grint saying that he’d love to return to the role if the project gets the timing right and everyone else is on board.

“I don’t hate the idea of it,” he explains. “I mean, it was a character that I love. As long as everyone else was on board, I probably would.”

Rupert goes on to explain that it might also be a good idea to “ the torch” and let someone else have a go at his character, which, with the television reboot currently undergoing pre-production, is likely happening.

Daniel Radcliffe, on the other hand, wishes to let the past die.

“This isn’t the answer that anybody’s going to want, but I think I was so able to go back and enjoy it because it’s not a part of my day-to-day life anymore,” he told The New York Times in 2022. “I’m getting to a point where I feel like I made it out of Potter okay, and I’m really happy with where I am now, and to go back would be such a massive change to my life.”

Frankly, after watching Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts and reliving all those nostalgic memories, few of us would be actively against the idea of another sequel movie, even if it does end up adapting The Cursed Child in all of its distasteful disregard for established lore and continuity.

However, there have been no announcements yet, and the rest of the scuttlebutt should be taken with a boatload of salt. Besides, with Fantastic Beasts 3 going down as the lowest-grossing film in the Wizarding World franchise, I think it’s safe to say that WB will think twice before greenlighting another big-screen venture.

From face-melting sorcery spells to pulse-pounding action sequences between beloved characters, it’s not necessarily hard to comprehend why the Harry Potter franchise is so widely popular. And while the original franchise of movies has unfortunately run its course, perhaps a fresh-faced film interpretation can help continue on the engaging narrative for Potterheads.

Of course, we’re talking about the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie adaptation, which has long been discussed and speculated by Potterheads and critics alike. Focusing more on Harry’s son, the concept has gone on to become one of the most successful Broadway plays of all time, with similar success also occurring during West End shows in London. 

So with all of that triumph soaring, it makes perfect sense as to why Potterheads and die-hards of both the novels and plays would want to witness the Cursed Child movie hit the silver screen.

At the time of this writing, no, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child does not have a definite release date. In fact, confirmation of the movie in pre-production or filming has yet to be revealed, so it’s clear that the movie isn’t even turning wheels yet in the developmental stages. As of right now, there’s no conclusive timeframe as to when the movie could happen, or if it will even actually happen at all.

But for those ionate Potterheads who are patiently waiting for the next Wizarding World venture, it was already confirmed earlier last year that a fresh-faced Harry Potter reboot series would be coming to Max sometime in the near future — so all hope is certainly not lost. Although it’s best not to have hopes up for Daniel Radcliffe’s return, because it looks like he wouldn’t be open to making a comeback anytime soon.

Fans prepare themselves for the possibility that Harry Potter may continue after Warner Bro’s Discovery’s announcement to produce more films in the franchise. However, there is one Harry Potter story that currently exists that doesn’t have a screen adaptation as of late, and fans are not keen to see it come to life once more.

Reddit u/Senstitive-Yoghurt simply asked on r/HarryPotter if they’d watched a Harry Potter film based on the play, The Curse Child. Unfortunately, not everyone is keen to see this play come to life as it wasn’t their favorite Harry Potter story.

A majority of the responses were predominately a strong ‘no’. They rather see this series out of the official Harry Potter canon after J.K. Rowling said so after the success of the play received. Fans rather forget the stage play ever existed and that there wasn’t an eighth installment to Harry’s story.

Despite the backlash, fans have thrown ideas of other possible stories they’d like to see if Warner Bros decided to milk this cash cow even more. Some possibilities include a show about the Mauraders, a slice-of-life series with the Weasleys, or anyone that’s not Harry Potter. Give the spotlight to other characters in the Wizarding World, especially since the franchise introduced other Ministries of Magic in other countries.

It hasn’t been announced what type of Harry Potter or Wizarding World movie would be next on Warner Bro’s production block. However, it has been confirmed in the past that Daniel Radcliffe isn’t interested in reprising the role if given the chance. So if Radcliffe isn’t coming back to the franchise, maybe there is hope that Warner Bros and J.K. Rowling would explore other characters.

An official Harry Potter Twitter is copping some Expecto Patronum blasts from fans, with a seemingly harmless yet insensitive tweet about Pride Month receiving a backlash so strong it forced comments to be turned off.

The official Twitter for the New York production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child celebrated the beginning of Pride Month on Tuesday with a photo of the LGBTQIA+ flag colours splashed over a shot of two characters swimming through the Eye of the Beholder.

In hindsight, it’s a completely harmless photo. The person behind the post may have had good intentions and even be part of the LGBTQIA+ community. But the optics of a social media channel for a Harry Potter product tweeting in of the queer community and Pride when its creator J.K. Rowling continues to make harmful comments about the trans and non-binary communities is, shall we say, Not Good.

of the LGBTQIA+ community called out the post and the irony. Nearly 400 s dragged it before comments were shut down; there’s over 3000 quote tweets but only 700-plus likes. That’s extremely telling.

Fans responded by sharing photos of their pets and characters in front of the trans and non-binary flag. Others quipped that it was particularly audacious for a Rowling-licensed social media channel to have the balls to tweet about Pride.

One fan asked in the replies if the production team planned on giving any of its revenue to LGBTQIA+ charities. They then accused the team of exploiting queer identities during pride for “free advertising”.

Another called the tweet an example of “rainbow capitalism”.

Need this be a simple lesson to corporations during Pride. We can all see through your performative activism and rainbow capitalism. Do better.

Recent history has shown that very few franchises are truly ever over for good, with Hollywood having successfully weaponized nostalgia and used it to inject flagging brands with a new lease of life. Based on the grim prognosis for the Fantastic Beasts series, a live-action adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child could be the only way to save the big screen Wizarding World.

The third chapter of Newt Scamander’s planned five-film story dropped off the top of the domestic box office after just three days, and that was after a soft $43 million opening. Reviews have been trending slowly downwards, too, and it looks as though critics and audiences are making it abundantly clear that they’re quickly losing interest in the magical universe.

With that in mind, exhibition and theatrical analyst Jeff Bock revealed to The Wrap that the best way for the property to restore former glories would be to reunite the original cast and bring The Cursed Child to life.

“There’s still a lot of directions that Warner could take Wizarding World in the long-term, but right now they need to get back to what people like most about it, and that’s Harry. Whether it’s a Cursed Child adaptation or something else, the next project should be something closer to the books that builds an appetite for a spinoff that can really branch out the way the first Fantastic Beasts did.”

A lot of fans would agree with that sentiment, but the obvious deal-breaker is the reluctance of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint to return to the well. The trio aren’t ruling it out eventually, but it won’t be happening anytime soon.

Either Warner Bros. plows forward with two more Fantastic Beasts movies, throws a pile of cash at the OGs to make The Cursed Child, or it reboots Harry Potter from the ground up as a possible HBO Max series and associated spinoffs, because we all know the boardroom isn’t giving up on one of its most lucrative cash cows.

James Snyder, who plays Harry Potter in the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Broadway show, has been sacked from the play following complaints by a cast member of alleged misconduct.

As reported by Variety, a third-party investigation was launched by the production company of the play after a complaint was filed against Snyder in Nov. 2021 by his co-star Diane Davis, who portrayed his on-stage wife Ginny Potter.

“Immediately upon receiving this complaint the producers commissioned an independent investigation by a third party, and Mr. Snyder was suspended pending the investigation’s completion, at the conclusion of the investigation, the producers decided Mr. Snyder should not return to the production and terminated his contract.”

Cursed Child producer’s statement

In addition, producers revealed that Davis has “made the personal decision to take a leave of absence.

“Out of respect for her privacy — and to maintain the integrity of the investigation — we will make no further comment regarding the matter.”

The nature of the complaint or how long her leave of absence will be is currently unknown.

The statement from Cursed Child‘s producers ends with an affirmation to create a respectful workplace environment.

“We are committed to fostering a safe and inclusive workplace, which is why we have robust workplace policies and procedures in place for all those involved in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. This includes strict prohibitions against harassment in any form, as well as channels through which any employee can report conduct that they believe is inappropriate. We will continue to do all we can to ensure the extremely talented team that brings this production to life feels safe, empowered, and fully ed.”

Snyder has previously starred in Broadway plays such Cry Baby and If/Then, as well as films like She’s The Man and Pretty Persuasion.

A film adaptation of the Cursed Child is rumored to be in development by Warner Bros.

Chris Columbus may have turned down the opportunity to direct what eventually became Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man by opting to launch the Harry Potter franchise instead with Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets, but he’s recently been voicing what almost sound like regrets over his time overseeing The Boy Who Lived’s early adventures.

Not only did the filmmaker it that he initially planned to stick around and adapt all seven books in the series, but he revealed that he harbored ambitions to turn stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child into a movie, with the core cast around the right ages to make it work.

That’s not to say Warner Bros. have a vested interest in making it happen, but as you can see from the responses below, a lot of fans aren’t sold on the prospect of a Cursed Child feature film, with or without Columbus at the helm.

The Fantastic Beasts spinoff series faces a pivotal moment with the release of The Secrets of Dumbledore next April, while rumors abound that HBO Max are developing any number of episodic projects. However, in an interview with Variety to mark the 20th anniversary of the first installment, Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets director Chris Columbus its that he harbors ambitions to adapt stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for the big screen.

“I would love to direct The Cursed Child. It’s a great play and the kids are actually the right age to play those roles. It’s a small fantasy of mine.”

Naturally, it’s been mooted at various points as a distinct possibility, but it’s never come anywhere close to entering development in an official capacity. It’s been a decade since The Deathly Hallows drew Harry Potter to a close, and almost two since Columbus was involved in the property, so the chances of him getting his wish look slim for the time being.

The status of a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child live-action film seems to constantly change. We know that Warner Bros. are enthusiastic about the prospects of a full-on Potter sequel to run in parallel with the Fantastic Beasts spinoff series, but J.K. Rowling is reportedly dead set against The Cursed Child becoming a movie. Plus, you have to imagine that the producers of the London and New York theater show are eager to maintain the exclusivity of their experience. However, we’ve heard that Warner Bros. may have found a way around this that pleases everyone. The Cursed Child is a sequel to Rowling’s books, not the studio’s movies. So, why can’t there be a sequel to the films that uses elements from The Cursed Child while remaining very much its own story? This idea of not directly adapting the show seems to be gaining traction as well, as we’ve now heard that they’re eyeing actors to play Albus Potter, Harry’s son. At least, that’s according to sources close to WGTC – the same ones who told us a live-action Robin Hood remake was in the works at Disney, Taskmaster would be the villain in Black Widow and [SPOILERS] would be revealed as a traitor in The Rise of Skywalker, all of which were correct.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child may have been an unexpected and rather unusual sequel to the story of the Chosen One, but it also gave us the perfect opportunity to spend a little more time with our favorite characters in the Wizarding World of Hogwarts. It was just a couple of years ago when J.K. Rowling announced that the official sequel to The Deathly Hollows was in the works to hit the stage in 2016. Unfortunately for Potterheads all around the world, though, earlier that year, the actor behind Severus Snape and legendary artist Alan Rickman lost his battle to pancreatic cancer and died at the age of 69. Rickman’s portrayal of the grey character, who even posed as a villain for most of the series, truly brought him to life and made his last goodbye at the end of the final film all the more emotional. As you may know, Rowling was really adamant that Rickman get the part and even went so far as to disclose the secret ending, which revealed him as the true hero of the story, since the actor felt like he was getting typecast as a villain and growing tired of it. So, as you’d expect, the writer developed an emotional connection with the actor who’d portray her most significant and layered character.

“In Harry Potter & the Cursed Child, Snape makes his first appearance with his back to the audience,” she wrote on Twitter. “At the dress rehearsal I saw him in his long black wig & my eyes filled with tears because, for a split second, my irrational heart believed when Snape turned round, I’d see Alan.”

This heartfelt is enough to bring any fan to tears, but let’s take heart in knowing that Rickman’s legacy will live on through Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for years to come.

While The Deathly Hollows seemed like a definitive end for the story of Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling still came up with a sequel against all odds almost four years ago and fans have ever since wanted to see the stage play adapted on the big screen. The matter of adapting Harry Potter and the Cursed Child can present producers with many conundrums, or even end up putting the cast and crew into a monotonous development hell, but considering the demand, the level of fan anticipation might ultimately justify the means. In addition, Daniel Radcliffe hasn’t ruled out a possible return as the Boy Who Lived, so odds are, we might actually see this live-action adaptation in the near future. Some Potterheads, though, are more eager and devoted than the rest, and they’ll stop at nothing to bring this project to life. But even if not for this extremely vocal minority, it’s pretty evident from the fan trailer above that the eventual commercial success of a sequel project like this is already guaranteed.
